CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Gladiolus Amicitia
AGE: 23
CANON: Final Fantasy XV

CANON HISTORY: here
CANON PERSONALITY:
Long have there been the storied tales of the pillar of any group, the mom friend. Gladio is not the mom friend, but is an entirely new take on the concept. Enter the dad friend. Fiercely protective and honestly-just-wants-to-see-you-be-successful, while also being the one to come down and spoil the fun at a moment's notice, Gladio is the definition of what it could mean to be the dad friend.

First and foremost, Gladio has been trained his whole life to take up the mantle of Crownsguard, and for this reason, he is readily able and willing to protect Prince Noctis and, by extension, the whole group at any cost. He is the first to get in the way when the going gets tough, but more than that, he's also the first to ensure Noctis and the others are being properly taken care of. This can sometimes mean Gladio comes in with a brand of "tough love".

Gladio, despite being sworn in service to the Chosen King, is ready and willing to speak his mind at any moment, especially when he's got a problem with the way things are happening. This is shown in the game when Gladio consistently butts heads with Noctis, who struggles to accept his role as the king, let alone a Chosen one. Gladio fiercely believes in responsibility and owning up to your actions, meaning he's the first to tell Noctis when he disagrees with how the prince is handling things.

This also manifests in just how much he cares about the other three altogether, as he's the first one to voice his concerns that Noctis is too consumed with himself to consider how Ignis, who was severely injured at a certain point of the game, is feeling, especially when it isn't clear that Ignis will ever recover. With Ignis' newfound disability, Gladio is the first to speak up when Noctis appears to not consider their friend, especially if the prince runs on ahead too fast while they travel.

Really, Gladio is extremely concerned with responsibility, and as a teen when he had just begun his service to Noctis he actually hated the guy at first. He thought he was just a spoiled little prince, and it genuinely rubbed him the wrong way. Gladio is pretty judgmental at his worst, but really he just holds both himself and those close to him to a high standard. When Noctis did a favor for Gladio's sister, though, even at his own personal expense, Gladio started to finally respect him.

Gladio's entire life is basically in devotion to other people, so he thinks of others first (even as judgmental and critical as he can be). In fact, when he perceives himself as failing to fulfill his duties to protect others, especially Noctis, he takes great lengths to improve himself just so he's worthy of being a protector. He takes this very seriously, even taking on challenges that nearly no one else has survived.

He doesn't really do well with academia (although he likes to read on occasion), but when it comes to physical fitness, he's an expert, and he often moves to pass this onto Noctis, who just sort of lets it happen because he knows Gladio is stubborn as hell. All in all, though, Gladio can be considered a pretty cheerful guy, despite the gruff exterior, and he feels most at home in the outdoors, where he takes to camping and hunting with great excitement.

Lastly, and most importantly, Gladio would do fucking anything for a Cup Noodle™.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
SURVIVAL
Gladio is extremely practiced in the art of roughing it. Camping, hunting, and just generally living off the land are all included in this. In the game, this is represented by Gladio occasionally finding random items while out and about in the world, but he's generally considered to be the one who takes the lead when they're out in the wilderness.

STRENGTH
He could probably bench press several children. Of the main group in the game, Gladio has the highest hitting ability as well as ability to take a hit. In game terms, he's the tank.

GLAIVE ARTS
He is extremely skilled in the use of greatswords, which are basically just any sword that's as large as a fucking person, which he can swing around with ease. He also uses shields to further boost his defenses, as well as knock people over. He's got sword techniques for various situations that are good at crowd control or focusing on a larger enemy.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Gladiolus Amicitia
AU AGE: 23
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: In Recollé, Gladio is missing the large scars on his face and chest. Additionally, rather than a large, traditional raven tattoo spanning his back, chest, and arms, Gladio has a simple blackwork tattoo of an iris flower on his left upper arm (not necessarily for his sister's name since she's appable, but definitely for his sister's favorite flower).

AU HISTORY:
You could say Gladio was born into his means and not necessarily be off the mark. If you ask him, though, his parents' money doesn't really have anything to do with him. As a young child, though, he grew up pretty comfortably, though he didn't exactly get everything handed to him. His dad pretty strictly hammered the idea of independence and earning your own means into his first child, so everything he received he had to prove he deserved and work for it himself.

Shortly after his younger sister was born (when Gladio was 8), his parents' rocky relationship came to a head and things finally fell apart. The divorce was messy, and while Gladio has vague memories of there being plans to see his mom on weekends and holidays, things didn't really pan out that way and his father took up the full reigns of raising the children. Which, combined with his busy work as one of the higher ups for Caelum Security, a successful cybersecurity company, meant most of the child-raising was really left to little Gladio.

Gladio became extremely close to and protective of his sister well into his teen years, while he enjoyed an extremely distantly resentful relationship with his mother who quickly grew into a complete mess of a person and he only occasionally had contact with. Meanwhile, his father was mostly a "final say" kind of parent who was largely hands off, so Gladio took a lot of responsibility himself. This also means, though, that Gladio ended up getting into a ton of trouble while left to his own devices, mixing with unsavory types, dabbling with drugs and underage drinking, getting into fights, and throwing a couple wild parties while his dad was away that he always got in major trouble for.

Eventually, this all caught up to him when he was finally forced to confront the effect it was having on his younger sister. He needed to be a better example. So, rather than channeling his teenage aggression into fights and partying, he took up boxing.

He boxed through most of high school, and actually got pretty fucking good at it while simultaneously liking it enough to keep his studies up for the sake of continuing. Eventually, he even got a scholarship to Recollé University to join their boxing team. Worried about leaving his sister behind, she urged him to accept and he was shipped off to college in Recollé.

Unsure what to actually go to school for, though, at first Gladio was undeclared, until eventually he settled in as an English major because what the hell, he kinda likes reading. Then, all at once, he graduated at the age of 22 and was forced to confront the modern world, where English degrees frankly don't leave a lot of opportunity, even if you're an alright boxer. Rather than making the walk of shame back to his dad's house, he decided to stay in Recollé and figure his shit out. He got a job at a ramen shop as a line cook, where he remains to pay his rent on a very tiny apartment he found nearby so he doesn't have to buy a car. (Secretly, though, he harbors a deep love for Cup Noodles over the real thing.)

NOTE: Alignment with Noctis' AU history (i.e. the fact Gladio's dad works for Caelum Security) done with permission!
AU PERSONALITY: A lot of the key aspects of Gladio's personality remain in place. The importance he places on responsibility and independence, his deep respect for hard work, and his concern for others and headstrong attitude leading to a judgmental nature are all firmly in tact.

But, he now has a sort of self consciousness due to his simultaneously being born with a silver spoon in his mouth as well as an inability to find a successful career quickly after graduating university. He remains proud of his minimum wage work, sure, and his perfectionism extends to his job, but only within the confines of the job itself. He doesn't exactly lavish advertising his low-paying job in food service, and he's not proud of the fact he only has a shoebox of an apartment to go home to.

He wants to set a good example for his sister, but feels sort of helpless with where he's at. He cares less about his father in Recolle than he does in canon, because his experiences with his father have been pretty cold, but he still does care about him. As a result of this distance from his father and his experience of his mother walking out, he doesn't have the same dedication to the family line he does from canon, and cares a lot more about being able to find your own way in life. In canon, he believes in duty to your birthright wholeheartedly. In Recolle, he cares about finding what you want most for yourself.

He's still fiercely protective of the people he holds dear, and may even jump to the rescue of someone who found themselves in danger. But he's less gung ho about killing people who, in his eyes, deserve it, opting to leave that decision to people more qualified. He definitely looks down on bullies, somewhat hypocritically, as he used to be one and still sort of has the same habit of picking on people. He also completely still takes out his stress on others and misdirecting his anger.

Though his party days are over, he's now somewhat inclined to slip back into old habits and shirk his responsibilities temporarily. He recognizes he's at risk for addiction, to alcohol or otherwise, but his impulsive nature works against him here. He's not a planner, which feeds back into his direction in life; he doesn't know what he wants to do except in the moment, and he follows his spontaneity rather than thinking through decisions.

He remains bullheaded and outspoken, even hypocritically so in some cases. However, he's less likely to spoil the fun, since he doesn't want to be "that guy". Canon Gladio is the stern dad friend, but in Recolle, Gladio is the fun dad friend.
